This creamy homemade ravioli sauce combines rich crushed tomatoes, fragrant garlic, and smooth heavy cream to create a luscious, flavorful topping perfect for your favorite ravioli or pasta dishes. Enhanced with Italian seasoning and parmesan cheese, this sauce is quick and easy to prepare, taking just 30 minutes from start to finish.

Ingredients

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For Serving:

  • Fresh parsley for garnish
  • Cooked ravioli or pasta of choice

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil and sauté onion: Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  2. Add garlic: Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to release its aroma without letting it burn.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes and seasoning: Stir in the 15 oz can of crushed tomatoes along with 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook gently for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop.
  4. Add cream and parmesan: Reduce the heat to low and stir in 1/2 cup of heavy cream and 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese. Continue to simmer the sauce for an additional 5 minutes, stirring regularly until the sauce is creamy and slightly thickened.
  5. Season the sauce: Taste the sauce and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper according to your preference.
  6. Combine with cooked pasta and serve: Toss the warm sauce with cooked ravioli or your favorite pasta. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving for a burst of color and added freshness.

Notes

  • Use freshly grated parmesan cheese for the best flavor and texture.
  • For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream.
  • You can prepare this sauce ahead of time and reheat gently on the stovetop before serving.
  • Add crushed red pepper flakes if you prefer a spicy kick.
  • Fresh herbs like basil or oregano can be added for extra freshness.
