This no-fuss dessert combines the classic flavors of chocolate and Oreos for a crowd-pleasing treat perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake:

  • 1 Box Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix (and all ingredients required on the box, usually eggs, oil, and water)

For the Topping and Pudding Layers:

  • 14.3 oz Oreos (about 1¾ cups crushed)
  • 12.8 oz Hot Fudge Sauce (approximately 1 jar)
  • 3.4 oz Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix (2 packages total, divided)
  • 3½ cups Milk (divided into two 1¾ cups portions)
  • 1 Container (approx. 8 oz) Cool Whip

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Mix: Combine the chocolate fudge cake mix according to the instructions on the box, which typically includes eggs, oil, and water. Mix until the batter is well combined.
  2. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into a greased 9×13 inch baking pan and bake for 22-28 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes once done.
  3. Poke Holes in Cake: While the cake is still warm, use the end of a wooden spoon or a similar rounded object to poke holes all over the surface of the cake. This helps the fudge soak in.
  4. Add Hot Fudge Sauce: Heat the hot fudge sauce in the microwave for 30-60 seconds until pourable. Pour the entire jar over the cake, allowing it to absorb as the cake cools completely. Reserve some fudge for topping.
  5. Prepare First Pudding Layer: Mix one package of the dark chocolate instant pudding mix with 1¾ cups cold milk. Before it sets, pour the pudding over the cake. Refrigerate for about 15 minutes until the pudding sets.
  6. Prepare Second Pudding Layer: Mix the second package of pudding mix with 1¾ cups cold milk separately. Refrigerate until set.
  7. Crush Oreos: Place about ¾ of the Oreos into a large Ziploc bag and crush them into small pieces using a rolling pin or heavy object.
  8. Mix Dirt Layer: Once the second pudding has set, mix it thoroughly with the container of Cool Whip until well blended. Fold in the crushed Oreos to create the ‘dirt’ mixture.
  9. Assemble the Dirt Layer: Spread the Oreo and Cool Whip pudding mixture evenly over the top of the cake.
  10. Garnish and Chill: Top the pie with the reserved hot fudge and remaining whole or crushed Oreos. Serve chilled. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients where possible for better mixing and texture.
  • For a stronger chocolate flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of instant espresso powder to the cake mix.
  • Ensure pudding is poured before it sets for proper layering.
  • Cool Whip can be substituted with whipped cream for a lighter texture.
  • Keep the pie refrigerated until serving to maintain structure and freshness.
